About Port Hope

Port Hope is a town located on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Ontario, Canada. The town has a rich history, dating back to the late 1700s when it was founded as a shipping port for the surrounding agricultural region. It played a major role in the development of the Canadian agricultural industry in the 19th century and was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by African American slaves to escape to freedom in the early 1800s. Today, Port Hope is known for its cultural and outdoor activities. It hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the Port Hope Farmers’ Market, Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny (a paddle race down the Ganaraska River), and the Port Hope Fair. The town is also home to several parks and trails, including the Ganaraska Forest, which offers over 4000 acres of scenic hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing trails. Port Hope is also known for its beautifully preserved historic downtown, which contains over 250 heritage properties dating back to the late 1700s. With its charming shops, cafes, and restaurants, it is a popular destination for visitors looking to experience small town Ontario.
