It was founded in 1857 as Illinois State Normal University and was one of the first institutions of higher education created specifically for the preparation of teachers in the United States. The Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University is a championship 18-hole golf course designed by professional golfer D.A. Weibring. It is one of the top university golf courses in the United States and is open to the public. Illinois State University is also home to the Milner Library, one of the largest academic libraries in Illinois. The library holds over 1.5 million volumes and provides access to a variety of resources including electronic databases, government publications, and special collections.
