About Thorpeness

Thorpeness is a small coastal village located in the county of Suffolk, England. It was created in the early 20th century by Scottish barrister and playwright Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, who wanted to build a fantasy holiday village with mock-Tudor buildings and a boating lake. The centrepiece of Thorpeness is the Meare, a man-made lake which covers over 60 acres and features several islands with exotic names such as Whinny, Murtledove, and Jackdaw. Visitors can hire rowing boats to explore the lake and admire the wildlife, including ducks, geese, and swans. Another notable feature of Thorpeness is the House in the Clouds, a water tower disguised as a cottage which stands 70 feet tall and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The village also has a long sandy beach, perfect for picnics and walks. In addition, there are several restaurants, pubs, and shops for visitors to enjoy. Thorpeness is a popular destination for tourists who are attracted to its unique charm and picturesque setting.
