St. Eugene Mission, British Columbia, Canada — Canada

About St. Eugene Mission

St. Eugene Mission is a former residential school located in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada. The school was opened in 1898 and operated by the Catholic Church until its closure in 1970. It was established as a place for Indigenous children to receive education and religious instruction, but it was also part of a larger effort to assimilate Indigenous people into Canadian society. In 2000, the former school was renovated and reopened as the St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino, a luxury resort and casino that recognizes its history and the impact of residential schools on Indigenous communities. The resort features a museum dedicated to the history of the residential school system and the experiences of Indigenous people in Canada. In recent years, the resort has also become a venue for Indigenous cultural events, including powwows and Indigenous art exhibitions. The St. Eugene Mission is an important site for reconciliation and education, as it provides opportunities for non-Indigenous people to learn about the history and legacy of residential schools, and for Indigenous people to share their culture and experiences.
