About Metacomet

Metacomet (Closed) was a popular golf course located in East Providence, Rhode Island. The course was designed by Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek in 1936 and was named after the Wampanoag Indian chief Metacomet, also known as King Philip, who led a war against the New England colonists in the 1670s. The course was known for its challenging layout, with narrow fairways and small greens, and was a favorite among local golfers. Despite its popularity, the course closed in 2018 due to declining revenue and increased maintenance costs. The property was subsequently sold for development, and plans call for a new mixed-use development featuring housing, retail, and community spaces.
