About Andrew johnson

Andrew Johnson served as the 17th President of the United States from 1865 to 1869. He was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1808, but eventually settled in Greeneville, Tennessee, where he worked as a tailor before entering politics. Johnson served as mayor of Greeneville before being elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives and later to the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. He was the only Southern senator to remain loyal to the Union during the Civil War, and as president, he worked to rebuild the South after the war's devastation. Johnson also oversaw the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. Today, the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site in Greeneville preserves several buildings associated with Johnson, including his home and tailor shop.
