About New Town Bay
New Town Bay is a picturesque estuary located on the eastern shore of the River Derwent in Tasmania, Australia. It is situated between the suburbs of New Town and Sandy Bay and is an important wildlife habitat and recreational area. The bay has a rich history, having been used by the local Aboriginal people as a fishing ground for thousands of years. Today, New Town Bay is home to a diverse range of birdlife, including swans, pelicans, cormorants, and black swans. The area is also popular for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and sailing. The Sandy Bay Regatta, one of Tasmania's most iconic events, is held every February in New Town Bay. Unfortunately, the bay has also been the site of pollution in the past due to urbanization and industrial activities in the area. This has led to efforts to clean up and protect the bay's ecosystem, including the establishment of the New Town Bay Marine Conservation Area.
