About Leeuwkop
Leeuwkop Prison, also known as Leeuwkop Maximum Security Prison, was a maximum-security prison located in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was opened in 1990 and was designed to house dangerous criminals who were considered a threat to society. The prison had a capacity of around 3,000 inmates. Leeuwkop was known for its strict security measures, which included being surrounded by high walls and armed guards, as well as security cameras and electronic surveillance. It was also known for its harsh conditions, with inmates enduring long periods of isolation and being subject to brutal treatment by guards. The prison was closed in 2019 as part of a government plan to reduce the number of correctional facilities and improve the conditions of inmates in South Africa. The site is now being considered for redevelopment as a mixed-use development, including residential and commercial space.
