About Indian Boundaries

Cook County, which is located in the northeastern part of the state of Illinois, was once home to several Native American tribes. The area was inhabited by the Potawatomi, who were a part of the larger Algonquian language group, and they lived in the region for many centuries. However, by the early 19th century, European settlers had begun to move into the area, and the Native American tribes were forced to relocate to other parts of the country. In 1829, the U.S. government signed the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, which ceded most of the land in Illinois to the federal government. The Potawatomi were given a large area of land in central Illinois in exchange for their territory in Cook County. However, by the 1830s, pressure from white settlers and the U.S. government had led to the forced removal of the Potawatomi from Illinois, as part of the Trail of Tears. Today, there are no officially recognized Native American reservations or territories in Cook County. However, there are several Native American communities and organizations in the area that seek to preserve and promote the history and culture of the region's indigenous peoples.
